Comparison of summer chlorophyll-a concentrations variability in the South China Sea and the Arabian Sea using remote sensing data

Abstract:
      The South China Sea (SCS) and the Arabian Sea (AS) are both located roughly in the north tropical zone with the range of similar latitude (0-24oN). Monsoon winds played similar roles in upper oceanic circulations of the both seas. But the distinct pattern of chlorophyll-a concentrations (Chl-a) was observed between the SCS and the AS. Chl-a in the SCS was generally lower than that in AS in summer (June-August); summer Chl-a in AS showed stronger inter-annual variation, compared with that in the SCS; Modis-derived data presented higher atmospheric aerosol deposition and stronger wind speed in the AS. And we have also found good correlations existed between the index of dust precipitation indicated by aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and Chl-a, or between wind speed and Chl-a. These implied that wind speed and dust precipitation brought larger nutrients supply into the AS from the sky, the sub-layer or coast regions, inducing higher Chl-a. The results indicated that wind and dust precipitation can play important roles in the Chl-a concentrations for the oligotrophic regions of both the AS and the SCS in summer.

      南海与阿拉伯海都位于赤道以北的热带,所处纬度相近(北纬0-24度),其上层海洋环流都受到季风的相似影响。但是在南海和阿拉伯海观测到的叶绿素a浓度分布有明显差异:在夏季(6-8月)南海叶绿素a浓度总体低于阿拉伯海;阿拉伯海叶绿素a浓度在夏季表现出比南海更强烈的年际变化;从Modis获得的数据显示阿拉伯海的大气尘降和风速更强。研究结果表明,风和大气尘降从空中携带了更多的营养物质进入阿拉伯海,在沿岸海域次表层的叶绿素a浓度较高。由此可见,风和大气尘降在南海和阿拉伯海的寡营养海域都扮演着重要角色。
